Well first of all what is a spark? What do I mean by the spark? It’s that part of us inside which responds in a good way to our experiences. It can arise differently inside each of us and could be a feeling, a sensation, some kind of deeper shift in our being and inexplicable. But however it manifests, the outcome is a sense of being fully alive, filled with wonder and enthusiasm, a sense of timelessness, loving what is in the moment with energetic expansion and raises us up to be in our authentic best self on our best day. The spark is where our sense of motivation and inspiration begins and gaining that sparking feeling helps us find out who we truly are.
Then something bigger can happen, when we have the spark and we allow it to grow, our energy radiates out and others can pick up on it. We then have what can be called an inner glow. We are so topped up with good feelings and energy that we can’t help but spread them to others...you know the saying love spreads...well that’s it. We hold our heads higher, feel taller, speak with love and enthusiasm about things, smile often and feel at ease with ourselves and the world in that moment. Others cannot help but respond to our presence and have more potential to be positively influenced.
Having (or losing) the feeling of spark and glow is recognised in our culture with phrases like “she lit up the room”, “when he made the speech, he was on fire”, “she had a twinkle in her eye” or “she’s lost her sparkle” “he’s a shadow of his former self”.
So when does it happen, what makes each of us sparkle? Well this is definitely the most interesting part of the story. It’s different for each and every one of us and is often linked to the things we are interested and feel passionate about. Some of us seem to know where to find this energy from the very beginning of our lives and get so fired up by one thing we do it all the time, becoming an expert in anything from quantum physics to, cake making to ice skating. But many of us are more likely to have several things over a lifetime we find to ‘float our boat’. Then some of us struggle to find “the thing”, to find when we truly feel alive and believe maybe we are never destined to find it.
Well I believe we can all find the things that light us up. The key is to be curious in life, to want to discover what helps us each to be sparked and never give up. Just keep looking, but also, remember to re-look. Go back to things you’ve tried before if you get an urge to try them or are presented with the possibility. You may rediscover something which was once lost to you, even from your childhood that will open up a new more enlivened world to you. Maybe you’ll roller skate again?
The other thing to be conscious of is what you’re saying to yourself...are you stopping yourself from trying new or old revisited things by believing they won’t work? Have you stopped being curious and believe you know all the outcomes and how it will all work out in your head? Are you listening to other people’s opinions of what you should try or like? If so, these things could hold you back from ever finding your spark. Start today, start by trying things. Actually do things, don’t just think about them. The worst that can happen (as long as you are trying something relatively low risk) is you find it doesn’t light you up inside....then you can tick that one off the list as ‘not you’ and just try something else.
Where is the Spark?
With every voice that calls you back
Every path leads away or to the track.
Finding each day is something new
But which one of them is really you?
Have you found what brings the spark,
A glint of what your life could start
To open up inside of you, a new
Exciting shining through
From duller days and lost momentum.
How can it be, you be yourself?
Search under every leaf ‘n’ on every shelf.
Speak only when you’re spoken to
By the inner voice that’s calling you.
Away from others that may be
But seeing yourself will set you free
To live this life, yours; wholeheartedly!
